Village of Midway Going All-Out for Canada Day

In 2022, the Vancouver Fraser Port Authority cancelled the city’s annual Canada Day fireworks show indefinitely.

Citing rising event costs, the federal agency added another line to Vancouver’s long list of reasons why it is regarded as “No Fun City.”

In the Okanagan, Osoyoos this month unexpectedly cancelled what was one of the largest Canada Day firework celebrations outside Ottawa. Typically the show would draw more than 20,000 onlookers, more than thrice the city’s permanent population. But not this year.

Instead of the “rising cost” cop-out, Osoyoos lamented “permitting changes” which resulted in delays. Which excuse is weaker, do you reckon?

Outside BC, Calgary has also terminated Canada Day for 2023, citing “cultural sensitivities” related to Chinese immigrants and First Nations peoples—even though neither group had actually made a request to cancel the fireworks. How anti-Canadian of them!

The patriotic among us will be happy to know, at least, that Boundary Country still remembers Canada is a nation worth celebrating.

For example, the Village of Midway is pulling out all the stops to honour our great country. The day promises a combination of community spirit, cultural entertainment, food, and fireworks.

To kick things off, the Midway Volunteer Fire Department is hosting a fundraising breakfast (7am-11am), located at the firehall adjacent to the village hall.

Midway thrift store The Bridge is offering a free lunch (11am-2pm) including hamburgers and hotdogs.

The main event begins at 3pm with the Midway Canada Parade. The parade route will commence from Boundary Central Secondary School, coursing through the town and ending at McMynn Park—the hub for the remainder of the day’s activities.

McMynn Park will come alive with games and karaoke (4pm-6pm), hosted by the Sultan of Sound, Randy Kappes. This is a chance for local talents to take the spotlight and entertain their community.

A beer garden will open its doors (5pm-10pm) with proceeds going towards the Midway Splash Park Committee.

The Midway Community Club will provide meals for up to 300 people featuring pulled pork burgers (6pm-8pm). The dinner is free with donations toward the MCC’s events and programs are appreciated.

Musical entertainment will take centre stage after dinner, courtesy of Midway’s audio expert, Rockin’ Ronnie Nociar.

The Midway Volunteer Fire Department will then set off an impressive fireworks display shortly after 10pm, weather permitting.
