It was a big deal for the city of Grand Forks when Boundary Country’s first Tim Hortons opened in 2022.
The bustling coffee shop on Highway 3 became an instant hotspot for coffees and hangouts.
Tim Hortons joined fellow fast food chain restaurants A&W and Dairy Queen, who have been serving up Teen burgers and frosty Blizzards in town for some years.
Joining the mix eventually will be a fourth major chain—perhaps the most iconic of them all: McDonald’s.
City council approved a development permit this month from McDonald’s Canada to build at the corner of Highway 3 and 27th Street, reports My Grand Forks Now.
Mayor Everett Baker commented on the news, stating it is a “tremendous opportunity” to have a “brand name” choose the city of Grand Forks. The nearest McDonald’s restaurants are in Osoyoos and Castlegar.
The fast food joint, planned to be approximately 5,000 square feet in size, is expected to cost roughly $1.6 million, according to the council application.
No timeline for construction was offered.
