Residents and travellers are asked to plan ahead and be FireSmart this Victoria Day long weekend.
“This time of year, most new wildfires are preventable, and people are being asked to use caution and take steps to be more prepared this weekend,” a statement from the Government of British Columbia reads. “Throughout the province, people are encouraged to stay up to date on current wildfire activity and check for road closures, evacuation alerts and orders, weather conditions and follow instructions from local governments.”
Open-burning prohibitions are in place around the province, the bulletin notes, and are updated on the newly enhanced BC Wildfire Service mobile app as conditions change.
For the latest road conditions and updates, government officials recommend Canadians visit the Drive BC website.

FireSmart awareness aside, B.C. offered the following “general tips for a safe trip.”
- Anticipating busier roads, allow additional time to get to a destination.
- Prepare your motor vehicle for the excursion by checking the gas tank, battery, engine fluids, lights, and tires (including the spare).
- Pack sufficient food, water, and emergency supplies for all people (and animals) in the vehicle.
- Plan your route, including strategic breaks at designated rest areas.
