The historic West Kootenay Power building in Greenwood is to be sold, the City Council concluded this month.
The local landmark “has stood for generations as a reminder of our community’s rich industrial past,” the City stated, “but over the years it has sadly fallen into disrepair.”
Current and past Councils “explored many options to restore the building,” including collaboration with the Greenwood Historical Society and other nonprofits.
However, citing “limited budgets and the ongoing responsibility of maintaining other key heritage assets,” the Council ultimately determined that “challenges simply proved too great for the City to take on.”
Following “careful consideration,” Greenwood City Council “made the difficult decision to sell the historic West Kootenay Power building.”
The City hopes “a new owner with the means and vision can breathe new life into this remarkable piece of Greenwood’s history.”
